Lotus silk is one of the rarest fabrics in the world. This lotus silk scarf features an original artwork that depicts Satyavatī, and her husband King Śantanu, in a serene, happy embrace.
One day, while walking along the banks of the Yamunā, King Śantanu followed a bewitching fragrance. It led him to Satyavatī, a black-eyed woman of celestial beauty, daughter of a fisherman-chief. She ferried travellers across the river.
Entranced, Śantanu sought her hand in marriage. The fisherman-chief agreed, but only on one condition, that Satyavatī's son must inherit the Kuru throne.
Bound by his promise to his son Devavrata, Śantanu returned to Hastināpura in despair. Sensing the cause of his father's sorrow, Devavrata went to the fisherman-chief himself. The fisherman-chief said, “King Śantanu alone is worthy of marrying Satyavatī. I only object because her sons would forever stand insecure, for you remain heir to the Kuru throne.”
Devavrata vowed, “I relinquish all claim to the throne in favour of Satyavatī's sons.”
Yet, the chief hesitated. “I have no doubt that you will keep your vow. I am, however, concerned if your children will keep this vow as well.”
Without pause, Devavrata replied, “I shall never wed. I shall never father children. I take a vow of lifelong Brahmacarya.”
Stunned by his sacrifice, the Devas, Apsarās, and Ṛṣis showered him with flowers. The devas gave him the name Bhīṣma — the one whose vows are terrible. Śantanu granted him icchā-mṛtyu—the power to choose the moment of his death.
Overjoyed, the fisherman-chief gave his blessing, and thus Satyavatī, the daughter of a fisherman, became Queen of the Kuru Kingdom.
